The United Nations High Commission for Refugees, also known as the UN Refugee Agency, is a UN body specifically designed to protect and aid refugees in their journey to seek asylum, with the primary objective to uphold the rights of displaced communities and assist in their local integration. Over time, it has ensured that all member states have accepted fundamental rules regarding refugee human rights, as they campaign for a better third-country acceptance rate for these displaced parties. Whilst its decisions and mandates are limited to humanitarian aid as a third-party organization, its collaboration with the UNHRC and vast precedence in the international community make it a valuable asset and UN organ.

Addressing the Recent Surge of Climate Change Refugees

By 2050, it is estimated that more than 143 million people will have migrated as a result of the effects of climate change - a devastating environmental side effect of the Industrial Revolution, and one that has followed us into the 21st century at a pace previously unseen and uncontended with. In UNHCR, delegates will have to contend with mass migrations of displaced people, and will have to address ways to ensure that their rights are upheld and livelihoods can be sustained.
