The United Nations Security Council is one of the six main organs of the UN, tasked with ensuring international peace and security. Defined by the UN Charter, the Security Council's objective falls under their vast oversight towards economic and diplomatic relations, international security as well as natural and artificial calamities. Consisting of 15 member states, 10 of which are elected states serving two-year nonconsecutive terms, the UN Charter grants veto powers to 5 permanent member states: USA, UK, China, Russia, and France. Aided by the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the UN Charter over the years has authorized the body to interfere with highly sensitive security issues and maintain global peace.
Addressing the Current Security Status of Afghanistan and the Middle East
Already infected with insecurity, COVID, corruption, and government over-centralization, the Taliban’s takeover has only further destabilized the country of Afghanistan, and severely disrupted Middle Eastern political dynamics. An imminent threat to international security, the Taliban is rapidly fostering a volatile political landscape in the country. In BSJMUN 2022, delegates of UNSC are expected to contend with the Afghani government’s collapse, the rise of the Taliban, and tackle the hardest discussions of them all.
